Early Intervention 0-5 Training: Impact of Trauma on Early Child Development (0-5)

This course, presented by University of California (UC), Davis Continuing and Professional Education, addresses the impact of traumatic experiences on six areas of child development (physical and brain, cognitive, attachment and relationship, psychosocial, emotional, and moral). We will begin by reviewing normative child development and how traumatic experiences interact with age at exposure and protective factors to impact outcomes. We will then review how trauma exposure at various ages could impact the six areas of child development. Participants will explore and engage in experiential activities that will enhance their abilities to understand and to effectively address issues associated with trauma in children.

- Describe theories of normative child development across six areas of development
- Recognize the interplay of traumatic experiences, age at exposure, and protective factors
- Understand the impact of trauma on physical and cognitive development
- Understand the impact of trauma on attachment, relationship, and psychosocial development

- List steps child welfare workers can take to incorporate understanding of the impact of trauma in their work
