Strengthening Families Webinar: What Parents Say about Changing Mandated Reporting

Join the Center for the Study of Social Policy to learn about the newest Children’s Trust Fund Alliance publication: “What Parents Say About….Supporting Families Rather than Reporting Them: Changing Mandated Reporting Policies and Practices.“

This timely publication elevates the wisdom and voices of parents with life experiences involving the mandated reporting system. Parents are speaking out about how mandated reporting can cause trauma to children and families. This brief is designed to inform state and community leaders, Strengthening Families Network members, policymakers, early childhood leaders and other systems leaders about how:

• Families who need support often get investigated – not supported, and this leads to a fear of seeking needed supports and services.
• Improvements need to be made to mandated reporting laws, policies, and practices so that fewer families are subjected to unwarranted investigations, particularly those related to poverty that could be addressed through other supports.
• It is our communities, including educators, neighbors, medical professionals and service providers who are valuable resources for connecting families to supports that will help strengthen them and prevent future problems from developing.
• Mandated reporting laws, practices and trainings can be revised to create more opportunities for those connected to families to be able to offer greater supports.
• Parents who have needed support and who might be affected by reporting laws and policies can be involved in helping to shape future directions.
