ABOUT US

The California Training Institute (CalTrin) is passionate about advancing child abuse prevention through science-based, professional development and extended learning. CalTrin training is designed for staff of family strengthening and child abuse prevention organizations in California, including Family Resource Centers, Child Abuse Prevention Councils, community-based organizations, and other child- and family-serving systems. We believe that prevention-focused professional development should be accessible and applicable to your daily work.

CalTrin is a project funded by the California Office of Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP). We are managed by the Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. A strong partnership with our partner program, the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare (CEBC), is essential to our work providing training grounded in science and focused on implementation across the prevention continuum.

OUR LEARNING MODEL

Our innovative learning model enables child- and family-serving professionals to choose training and educational experiences that work for their schedule, learning style, and career path—all at no cost to learners. Learners engage with CalTrin by attending live, virtual training, completing self-paced courses, and exploring our extensive archive of recorded trainings and materials. Training is organized around four domains: Direct Service Delivery Skills, Evidence-Based/Evidence-Informed Service Delivery, Management & Leadership Development, and Trauma-Informed Systems.

When you register for a CalTrin training or learning event, we support your learning by inviting you to engage with the content in several ways. Many of our training offerings will include pre-work and/or post-work, as well as resources to help you implement what you’ve learned. Learning does not occur at a single point in time, so you will typically hear from us a few weeks after you’ve attended a training to offer support or provide more resources or opportunities for reflection. Some of our interactive trainings will also use learning exchange or community of practice-style follow-up meetings to help you address challenges and connect with others on the same journey.

We hope you’ll explore how professional development with CalTrin can help you and your organization provide evidence-informed, prevention-focused services to the children and families you serve.
