TRAINING DETAILS:
This training addresses the violence experienced by children and youth and the traumatic impact on their lives. We will define trauma, identify triggers, signs, and symptoms, and recognize trauma-driven behaviors. Trauma will be illustrated from a neuro-physiological point of reference and participants will examine ways to handle challenging behaviors and promote inner calming. Attention will be given to cultural factors, learning impediments, and trans-generational violence in families. We will also examine some effective ways of working with children and families within the context of their communities. Finally, we will address ways for service providers to reduce the risk factors of Secondary Trauma.
Participants will be able to:
- Name five different stress responses that are visible within themselves or the people they are working with
- Name nine different stressors that may lead to toxic stress in children and adults
- Identify the six guiding principles of trauma-informed practice
- Identify the two types of protective factors and the significance of these protective factors
- Describe three foundational concepts related to trauma-informed practice, healing, and resistance
- Identify the three types of stress responses found in various educational settings
Who should attend: All staff of family resource centers (FRCs), Child Abuse Prevention Councils (CAPCs), community-based organizations, and other child- and family-serving systems.

- This is an interactive training. Please be prepared to participate in activities such as group discussions, breakout rooms, and/or demonstrations. Your training experience will be best with the use of a webcam, audio, and a training environment conducive to active participation.

MEET THE SPEAKER
Christie Cotcher (she/her) is a mental health expert, with 15+ years of experience as a counselor and coach, who helps professionals navigate the modern world and their careers in healthy and affirming ways that support their wellness, manage their stress and burnout, and create sustainable approaches to living.
Born in the Bay Area and raised in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Christie went on to earn her BA in Psychology from the University of California Davis and her MA in Counseling from the University of Nevada Reno. Christie completed her therapy internship serving under-resourced families and communities, including those in Child Welfare and foster care systems, and trained in Trauma-Informed and Mindfulness-Based approaches. After becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, she continued to serve professionals by teaching ways to cultivate resilience and effective responses to stressors to create work-life alignment and well-being. After experiencing professional burnout firsthand as a therapist, she developed a curriculum and trained healthcare professionals, including therapists, social workers, and medical workers, on protective practices to manage and treat burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization.
Christie is an entrepreneur, coach, therapist, mentor, activist, and member of the disability rights community, along with other progressive human rights movements, who works to challenge toxic and oppressive practices, policies, and systems.
